Specialty · Culturally Affirming Care

Culturally affirming therapy where your background belongs in the room

You shouldn't have to explain your culture, defend your family, or translate your experience before you can get help. Culturally affirming therapy starts from respect for who you are and where you come from.

Growth & Guidance is a Black-owned group therapy practice. Our founder, Jalinia Logan, LCSW, CCATP, built it on one conviction: that warm, effective mental-health care should be within reach of the communities that have historically been furthest from it, including minority and underserved communities.

Culturally affirming care means your identity, family, faith, language, and community are treated as part of your story, not as obstacles to work around. It means a therapist who is curious instead of assuming, who understands that some stress comes from systems rather than from you, and who won't push you to talk about anything before you're ready.

Trust can take time, especially if you or your family have had experiences with care that didn't feel safe or respectful. We plan for that. You set the pace, and your therapist earns your trust rather than expecting it on day one.

How we help

Our clinicians are strengths-based and culturally affirming, and the practice hires clinicians who lead with respect for every client's background. In session, that looks like:

  • Starting with your story, in your words, at your pace
  • Naming the impact of racism, discrimination, and systemic stress when it's part of what you carry
  • Respect for your faith, family structure, and community values
  • Strengths-based work that builds on what has already helped you get through
  • Services available in Spanish as well as English
  • Approaches like CBT, solution-focused therapy, and trauma-informed care, adapted to your context

Why culturally affirming care matters

It's hard to open up when you don't feel understood. If you've ever held back in a doctor's office or a classroom because you didn't think the person in front of you would get it, you know how much energy that takes. In culturally affirming therapy, you can spend that energy on your own healing instead.

This kind of care also means being honest about what is a mental health issue and what is a systemic one, and helping you respond to each in ways that actually work for your life.

Making it normal to talk about mental health

Part of our mission is making mental health something people can discuss openly and with confidence. If you grew up hearing that therapy is for 'crazy' people, or that family business stays in the family, those messages can make reaching out feel risky. You are not crazy for needing support. Needing support is the most human thing there is.
