# Life transitions counseling for the in-between seasons

New chapters, hard pivots, and the in-between can all shake your footing, even when the change is one you chose. Counseling gives you a steady place to sort out what is ending, what is beginning, and who you want to be on the other side.

A transition is any change that asks you to reorganize your life: a new job or a job loss, a move, a graduation, a marriage, a separation or divorce, becoming a parent, an empty nest, a new diagnosis, or caring for an aging family member. Some transitions are celebrated. Others arrive uninvited. Many are a mix of both.

Even good changes can bring grief for what you're leaving behind, worry about what comes next, and a strange sense of not quite recognizing yourself. You may notice trouble sleeping, second-guessing decisions, irritability, or a pull to stay busy so you don't have to feel the shift. None of that means you're handling it wrong. It means something important is changing.

Our clinicians are strengths-based and culturally affirming. We help you name what the transition is stirring up, reconnect with what has carried you through change before, and take the next step at a pace that feels doable.

## How we help

Transition work is practical and personal at the same time. Across the practice, clinicians draw on solution-focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, narrative approaches, and supportive therapy, tailored to where you are right now.

- Making sense of the mixed feelings that come with change, including the ones that surprise you
- Solution-focused work to find the strengths you've already used in past transitions
- CBT for the worry and 'what if' thinking that can spike during uncertainty
- Room to grieve what is ending, even when the change was your choice
- Practical planning for decisions, routines, and the first few months of something new
- Support for how the change is affecting your relationships and family

## Kinds of transitions worth talking about

There is no official list of transitions that count. If a change is taking up a lot of room in your mind, it's worth talking about. A few examples:

- Starting, losing, or changing a job or career
- Moving to a new city, home, or school
- Separation, divorce, or the end of a relationship
- Becoming a parent, or children leaving home
- A new health diagnosis for you or someone you love
- Retirement, or a change in the role you play in your family
- Starting out on your own as a young adult

## When a transition overlaps with something heavier

Sometimes a change brings up older pain, or it comes with real loss. If a transition is tangled up with grief, a low mood that won't lift, or anxiety that keeps building, your therapist can help you look at those pieces too, so you're not trying to push through them alone.

Group counseling (https://growthguidancecounselingservices.com/service/group-counseling) can also help. Our groups are built around shared themes such as life transitions, where you can hear how others are working through something similar and feel less alone in the in-between.

## Coaching or counseling?

If you feel steady and mostly want structure and accountability for a goal, life coaching (https://growthguidancecounselingservices.com/service/life-coaching) may be a fit. Coaching is forward-focused, and it is not therapy or a substitute for licensed mental-health treatment. If you're looking for help with how a change is affecting your mental health, counseling is the right fit, and you can talk it through on a free consult.

## Who on our team works with this

## Common questions

- ### Is it normal to struggle with a change I wanted?
Yes. Wanted changes still ask you to let go of something familiar, and that can bring up grief, doubt, or anxiety alongside the excitement. Feeling mixed about a good change doesn't mean it was the wrong choice.
- ### How long does counseling for a life transition take?
It depends on you and what you're working on. You and your therapist will build a treatment plan together and check in on your goals as you go. Counseling can be a focused stretch around one change, or a place to work on patterns the transition brought to the surface.
- ### Can my partner or family join a session?
Sometimes, yes. If a transition is affecting the whole household, your therapist may suggest including a partner or family member when it can support the work. We also offer couple counseling and family counseling.
- ### Do you offer evening or online sessions?
Our offices are open Monday through Thursday until 8:00 PM, Friday until 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Telehealth by secure video is available across Illinois, Georgia, and Florida.
